VIA C7 Processor for Low-Cost Notebook

[Archived in Entry]

[Ideal Gadget] The new VIA C7 processor is the smallest, lowest power, most efficient and most secure native x86 processor in the world. Built on the advanced VIA CoolStream architecture, the Esther core of the VIA C7 processor is designed to extend the digital lifestyle by combining robust performance of up to 2.0GHz with ultra low power consumption and highly efficient heat dissipation.

[Tech Gadgets Blog - LiewCF.com] VIA C7 Processor for Low-Cost Notebook: The chip, which will be shown off next week in notebooks at the Computex trade show in Taipei, sports performance roughly in the same neighborhood as that for current notebook chips from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, according to Via executives.

[brainwagon] VIA Technologies, Inc. announces the C7: This website runs on a VIA Nehemiah 1Ghz motherboard. I used to run it on a dual 400Mhz Celeron box I built on an Abit BP6 motherboard, but that thing sucked power and generated heat far in excess of its utility. Now my webserver runs quiet and lowpower. That’s why I thought I’d plug the press release by VIA Technologies, Inc.

[Engadget.com] Via busts out inexpensive laptop processor - Engadget - www ...: Almost missed this one the other day, but Via, that other chip maker you don’t hear about all that often, introduced a new laptop processor last week called the C7 that’s smaller, lighter, and cheaper than similar chips. It’s also supposed to narrow (but not close) the performance gap between their chips and those of AMD and Intel that’s dogged Via for the past few years, as well as potentially bring the price of an ultralight laptop down to around $800. The first two C7 processors will run at 1.5GHz and 1.7GHz, with a 2GHz chip to follow later.

[Digg.com] Via's C7 processor promises 2 GHz for 20 watts: This cpu will allow silent computing at high speeds. I run a computer at 1 GHz and it is less-than whisper quiet with one slow fan. Silent computing is as beautiful thing. I hate jet engines.

[Hardwaregeeks.com] HardwareGeeks.com - VIA Launches VIA C7 Processor; World-class IBM ...: The VIA C7 processor also signals an era of practical pervasive security due to the industry-leading security features of the VIA PadLock Hardware Security Suite, a family of advanced security technologies providing on-die hardware acceleration for key cryptographic operations. In addition to the world's best random number generator (RNG) and AES Encryption Engine in the previous processor generation, the VIA C7 processor adds SHA-1 and SHA-256 hashing for secure message digests, and a hardware based Montgomery Multiplier supporting key sizes up to 32K in length to accelerate public key cryptography, such as RSA(TM). The VIA C7 also provides execute protection (NX), providing protection from malicious software such as worms and viruses, and is used in Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP with SP2. Integrating security directly onto the processor die ensures speeds and efficiency many times that available in software, yet with negligible impact on processor performance.
